How Much Would You Pay for a Cuddle?

After reading the title of my last post, a few people mentioned to me that they thought I was going to talk about how I could sell cuddle time with our daughter.  That wasn't the point of that post, but it IS the point of THIS post.

So - if we were to sell culddle time with our daughter, what would be the going rate?

Leave a comment below (on fb or on this blog).  If the demand is high enough, we might start charging.  Profits would be put towards a college fund.  After expenses have been taken out, of course.  Babies aren't free!

As a good economist, Josh, you know that at lower prices more cuddle time with Eva will be demanded than at higher prices. However, since demand for Eva is relatively inelastic -- there are few available substitutes; the cuddle price would be a relatively small portion of people's incomes; she's addictive -- you could probably raise the price and see an increase in revenue from Eva cuddles.

Eva's cuddle supply is also perfectly inelastic -- there is only one Eva -- over which you have monopoly power. You could restrict the supply of cuddles with Eva and watch the equilibrium price rise to where you desire, sort of like a new OPEC: The Organization for Proliferation of Eva Cuddles.

However, as more and more cute babies populate Saar Fellowship -- your own eventual second child among them -- you may find that the demand for particular cuddle time with Eva becomes a bit more elastic -- there will be more available substitutes, and people can adjust their Eva addictiveness in the long-run.

At this point, you'll want to lower your price to see an increase in revenue. You might also have to consider firm behavior in a more monopolistically competitive market structure. You may have to differentiate your daughter from others, perhaps through informative or persuasive advertising, e.g., "Our daughter is gifted" or "3 out of 4 people surveyed prefer cuddles with Eva".

Of course, there will always be a select few -- myself included -- whose brand loyalty to Eva cuddles will remain strong.
